February 22, 2001 9:21: A PHOTOGRAPH of Wycombe Corinthians Minors Football Team has brought together two friends who had lost contact for over 52 years.
Geoff Smith, of Spinfield Lane, Marlow, was delighted to see the face of old school pal, John Hemmings, when we published the picture of the 1949 team in the Free Press in January.
The pair attended Sir William Borlase's Grammar School, West Street, Marlow and although keen rugby players, spent most weekends playing soccer at the municipal pitches in Wycombe.
Young Geoff played for Totteridge minors while John Hemmings was a Corinthians player.
They lost contact when John left the team when he turned 18.
Mr Smith said: "Corinthians were the Manchester United of that era."
He added: "They were well organised, almost unbeatable, had splendid matching kit and some of them could even play a bit."
Former Corinthians' goalkeeper, Mick Putman, of Widmer End, brought the old pals together after Mr Hemmings, who now lives in the east coastal town of Lowestoft, contacted Mr Putman.
He received the picture in the post by another old friend who still lives in the area.
Mr Putman wants to track down anyone who was involved with the team and also the team as it was after his departure in 1952 for a reunion.
"It's been great hearing from all the old boys again," he said. "So far 16 players have contacted me and I'm expecting plenty more."
Anyone who thinks they can help track down any of the players contact Mick Putman on (01494) 715778
