As Dementia Awareness Week comes to an end it has become clear that the majority of adults in the South East misunderstand dementia and the factors that put people at risk.
Research of 2,004 adults in the UK by the Alzheimer’s Society showed that 59% of adults in the South East area realised there is not cure for dementia and approximately a third said that dementia was a natural part of aging.
According to the research 76% of adults in the South East assumed that family history put people at greater risk of the disease and 50% believed that history of mental illness increased risk.
Dr Susanne Sorensen, Head of Research at Alzheimer’s Society, says, “Clearly there is still a shocking lack of understanding when it comes to dementia. The truth is dementia is not a natural part of ageing; it is caused by diseases of the brain and robs people of their lives.”
According to the Alzheimer’s Society anyone can reduce the risk of dementia by changing their lifestyle. Their top tips for reducing the risk include staying active, eating healthily, not smoking and keeping a healthy weight.
Regular blood pressure and cholesterol check are also recommended.
