IT was always the worry. How would Wycombe react to their first league defeat of the season?
After battling to the last at Aldershot Town, they wobbled against Luton and Shrewsbury away looked a worrying proposition.
Oh ye of little of faith.
The magnificent performance, in defence and attack, at The New Meadow has resulted in Wycombe being top of the table by nine points at Christmas. And it promises to be a very merry one indeed.
I want to be cautious given the many despairs in this terrible league over the last few seasons. But I can’t.
We are nine points clear on merit and there certainly seems more to come.
Peter Taylor can take so much credit. He has built his team on a solid foundation – well-organised defence, good set piece delivery and at last a target man in Matt Harrold up-front.
You cannot say that Wycombe this season have been by far the greatest team the world has ever seen. But my word, the style of play has been effective.
There have been times this season when it seems certain the opposition will score. But even if the Blues sit back and let others play at times, you know that there is that last outstanding line of defence which is tough for even the best to break down.
It’s happened all season – the trips to Rochdale and Shrewsbury last weekend were prime examples of just how difficult Wycombe can be for others to play against.
Taylor is aware that the Blues cannot be complacent at all – and he has also managed to keep a healthy competition for places to keep players on their toes. What had John Mousinho done wrong to be dropped? Not a lot in my book.
Exeter City will be a tough game on Boxing Day. They have a decent away record with five wins. But Wycombe don’t fear anyone – they’ve proved that this season. I’m confident we will see the Exeter supporting BFP sports editor stewing on his Christmas pud come 5pm on Friday.
Merry Christmas everyone.
