IN the wonderful new library in the Eden centre on Wednesday, November 18, Kate Bradford gave a talk entitled Memories of the 20th Century.
The talk was certainly evocative and thought provoking. Of course nobody remembered the start of the century but recalled family talk of the whalebone corsets and the customs of those years.
Kate’s questions to the audience brought many memories and laughter about war time rationing and restrictions, meatless dishes and WIs’ monumental efforts with tons of plum jam. About how we all had to “make do and mend”, even wedding dresses made from parachute silk — and what good was done to the war effort by the ban of lace on our underclothes?
There was lively discussion amongst the audience after a thoroughly enjoyable talk.
The next talk entitled ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’, a journey through New Zealand, will be by Margaret Deakin on Thursday, January 15, at 7.30pm.
All are welcome and tickets are available from the library.
