It is hard to believe that Matty Phillips is still only 17, but with a bit more experience he will be an even better player.

His second half performance was the biggest plus for Wycombe on Tuesday at Barnet.

Phillips was simply outstanding and he certainly helped to change the game. The Blues were lacking width which Phillips gave. His crossing ability and determination to take on his man gives Wycombe that extra dimension.

Phillips should be a certain starter, especially if Peter Taylor is to play two big men up-front. I think that the 4-4-2 system, with two attacking wingers is the way to play. With Phillips, Chris Zebroski and Gavin Grant, Wycombe have no shortage of players that can fulfil that role.

Lewis Hunt was also impressive on his debut. The right back slot has been something of a poison chalice of late. Danny Senda and Russell Martin were converted into that position. They were never the most natural of right backs, and I get the impression that both those men would have been better suited to more forward roles.

In Hunt and Craig Woodman, it seems, at long last, that Wycombe have found two natural full backs, giving the side the ideal balance. You have to feel a little sorry for Scott McGleish. 26 goals last season, he was a bit of a talisman for Wycombe, but this season he has not really fit into Taylor’s style of play. I’d like to think he’ll come back into the side and play his part this season, but I cannot help but feel he may be off in the January transfer window.

It has hardly been the most entertaining of seasons for Wycombe so far but you cannot possibly complain with top of the table, unbeaten after 12 matches.

Taylor has shown that he brings nous and experience – and don’t forget the success he has enjoyed in terms of winning promotion at other clubs down the leagues.

At the end of the day, this club should have only one aim this season: to win promotion by any means possible. Fancy football (like the John Gorman era) was fantastic to watch, but it did not result in promotion.

Things have started well and long may they continue. And with the likes of Phillips, there is plenty of optimism for the future.
