I’M afraid I’m having difficulty working out the club’s policies for next week’s Johnstone Paint match with Shrewsbury Town.
Giving season ticket holders and Blues card holders free entry is an excellent gesture and will hopefully boost a gate for a match which is little more than a glorified reserve team game.
What is most impressive about this gesture is that Shrewsbury Town season ticket holders are included in the free entry offer.
But the cynical side of me sees downsides.
A 7pm kick off is absolutely ridiculous. The idea behind it is a Football League recommendation to start matches in the Johnstone Paint Trophy earlier to allow more children in without having to stay up long after their bedtimes.
Only one other club in the south (Peterborough United) has moved the kick off time from the traditional 7.45pm start.
So far it sounds good. But High Wycombe is a commuter town. Many people work in London, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Reading and further afield. Many struggle to even make 7.45pm kick offs. And many of these supporters also have children who they would like to take to the matches.
Whilst earlier kick offs may work well in other towns, High Wycombe is not one of them in my view.
The free entry to Blues card holders is another controversial aspect. The card obviously has many benefits for the club itself, but I see few for the consumer (sorry supporter).
The free entry offer is a way of encouraging supporters to the scheme.
It is important to point out that despite the club’s promotion of this card, there is still a cash turnstile so supporters can still pay on the door on the day. The club have extended this arrangement for at least another four matches.
The club clearly have work to do to get back missing supporters. In the four matches at Adams Park so far, an average of 4,516 people have attended. This despite every match being on a Saturday and including a local derby with Brentford.
I know it’s early but the average attendance is 230 down on last season and 477 down on the 2006-07 and we are top of the league!
I await the Shrewsbury attendance with interest and hope that the club are proved right.
But they must be worried with the falling attendances.
At a time of financial uncertainty, the cheapest matchday ticket of £15 appears to be way too high.
