WHAT an incredible start to the season! Incredible, because Wycombe have scored just six goals in their opening seven games and are in third. And incredible because of five clean sheets in a row.
Wycombe’s defence has been truly magnificent – they don’t even look like they are ever going to concede a goal. David McCracken, not a natural right back, has stood out for me because he has done the job well to the best of his abilities.
Every single member of that back four (or five if you include Scott Shearer) has excelled.
But the 4-5-1 formation with Chris Zebroski and Gavin Grant “supporting” Scott McGleish has blatantly not worked.
It’s time that Peter Taylor threw caution to the wind and played another striker.
Taylor was perhaps reluctant to play 4-4-2 against Brentford, as Wycombe’s midfield were over-run at Rochdale when Tommy Doherty was taken off. But with the Doc back, there is no reason why Matt Harrold should not start.
It’s difficult to feel sorry for Scott McGleish given his summer comments and disappointing reaction to being substituted against Brentford, but he has ran his socks off without reward for much for the season. He needs someone to play off.
McGleish was at his best last season when he partnered John Sutton and later Delroy Facey. I’m convinced that Harrold and McGleish can prove to be a decent front pairing for Wycombe.
Taylor knows at the moment he has a problem with goals but he does not strike me as much of a risk taker.
It’s all well and good having an outstanding record of five consecutive clean sheets but a 2-1 victory is better than a 0-0 draw.
I think some of the players need to take their boss on a team building day at Sandown Park or Wimbledon to teach him how to gamble.
It’s difficult to grumble too much. Signs are promising and I would have by all means taken this start if asked at the start of the season.
But as a fan you want more and more. Shrewsbury beat Gillingham 7-0 last Saturday, scoring more goals than we’ve scored all season. That puts our admittedly good start into a bit of perspective.
