The only problem with Wycombe’s start to the season is that it completely raises the expectations of everyone and gets the likes of you and me stupidly optimistic.

Morecambe, Chester, Lincoln and Chesterfield are hardly the greatest of teams but few would have expected a return of 10 points from those opening four games.

With just one goal conceded, it is a case of work from the back upwards. Wycombe’s back four have continued with where they left off last season. Mike Williamson and Leon Johnson can rightly lay claim to being one of the best central defensive pairings in the division.

The midfield has certainly gelled better than might be imagined with Gavin Grant and John Mousinho adding that extra bit of quality which was missing last season. And Tommy Doherty appears to be getting better and better.

The attack is the one weakness as it was last season with Scott McGleish and Chris Zebroski yet to really get going in terms of goals although they have shown a lot of promise.

Which brings me to the new signings! Peter Taylor’s Wycombe have performed so well without Matt Harrold, Simon Church (I know he played for ten minutes at Chesterfield but that does not count!) and Lewis Hunt.

Both Hunt and Harrold are hoping to make their debuts at Rochdale on Saturday and the two signings from Southend could be the missing pieces in Taylor’s jigsaw.

David McCracken is no right back and in my book Russell Martin, Danny Senda and Gus Uhlenbeek before him were not proper, traditional right backs either. Hunt is that man.

Harrold, known as Prince Harry as he looks like the third in line to the throne, is that tall target man that Wycombe have been looking for since the days of Andy Rammell.

Admittedly, Harrold’s goalscoring record is not great with around one in eight games but he is not that type of play – Scott McGleish is our goalscorer. I believe that Harrold can create goals for others and add a new dimension to our game.

Matty Phillips is another who is on the verge of a return while Matt Bloomfield’s recovery from injury will be a welcome boost mid-way through the season.

A trip to Spotland will certainly be another test. Rochdale had a very similar season to Wycombe last time out.

With so much optimism around now, let’s hope it’s not dented by a heavy defeat!
