Yesterday I travelled to the train station in High Wycombe, to catch a train to London. A novel idea, going to a train station to catch a train, but I do like to think outside the box. A rebel through and through, that's me.
I got there early for my 14.31 train; I have a huge fear of being late, and so as a result I tend to be ridiculously early for things. I needed to catch that specific train, however, because otherwise I would miss the connection from Victoria to Canterbury, which was my final destination. By the time I had collected my ticket and bought a coffee, it was 14.15, and my train was waiting on Platform 1. I lugged my very heavy bag onto the train, found myself a seat, plugged in my ipod, and began to think. We are lucky in Wycombe to have an absolutely fantastic train service, in my opinion. When I was at uni my method of getting to and from home during term time was a train to Marylebone, across to Paddington, and then out to Exeter. Not once in the three years I was away did I encounter a late train ion Chiltern Railways. The same has held true since I left uni as well, and I am thoroughly impressed.
Having travelled around the country to visit various people by train, I have come to the conclusion that we have the best train service in the land. No, we don't have a First Class section, but the seats are all comfortable anyway. And whilst I enjoyed the free coffee that First Great Western offered me whenever I was able to get a cheap 1st Class ticket, Chiltern Trains are far more relaible and comfortable. Certainly more so than Virgin, which I try to avoid as much as possible.
The staff are also mostly courteous, I was unfortunate enough last year to fracture my coccyx at uni, and on my way home the ticket inspector on the train from Marylebone noticed I was in some discomfort, and ensured that there was someone to carry my bag to where Father Eris was waiting for me at the station.
I am returning from Canterbury on Monday, and I can honestly say that the part of the journey I am looking forward to most is between Denham and Wycombe. Not only is the train most likely to be reliable and comfortable, but the countryside through which we whizz in Bucks is truely beautiful./
