Over the years it has been surprising how many of Wycombe’s buildings seem to mysteriously catch fire and burn to the ground. When the furniture industry was prominent it was nothing for a factory to catch light during the holiday closure however with today’s fire safety precautions the likelihood of a building going up in smoke should be negligible.
It came as a shock to me to read about the fire at Cressex School. At my school the worst that happened was someone got caught smoking behind the building but in this modern age it seems the buildings themselves are more likely to be caught smoking.
I know the school is being redeveloped but if this sort of thing is likely to happen the question must be asked if it's worth rebuilding on the current site. Surely an alternative site could be found in a more suitable location with a lower land value meaning the Council Tax payer could benefit from the revenue raised by any sale of land.
What amazes me is that the school has been shut since the fire. Surely portable buildings could be drafted in or perhaps even a tent erected on the playing field. Education is vital to our society yet there appears to be such a long delay in getting the school functional again. Surely there must have been a disaster recovery plan in place to return a school to normality after such an occurrence?
It may be every child’s dream having their school burn down so the half-term holiday is extended but the question must be asked about the sort of people we have in our society to do such a selfish act. What do you think?
