Burglary is probably one of the worst and sadly most common crimes that blights our society today. There is nothing worse than returning home to find your backdoor already open and the kitchen light burning brightly. Sadly I can tell you that from personal experience.
Of course the perpetrators of the crime are unlikely to be caught especially if they are professionals who took precautions to evade detection. The police will arrive to take details and perhaps send a forensic boffin in an attempt to find fingerprints. When the police have gone you are left with a crime number and the remains of your house. In my case is really was remains as I made the mistake of locking all my internal doors in the belief they would stop a burglary. Sadly the burglars used a jemmy to open the doors leaving me with broken locks and broken doors. I for one will never lock my internal doors again.
You can tell the houses that have been burgled because they usually have burglar alarms fitted. Indeed as my friend once told me you can tell how many burglaries there have been in an area just by counting the number of houses with alarms. Not only does this despicable form of crime affect residential premises but commercial too.
There was a story on the news section of this site today about a shop in the High Street that was the subject of a robbery a few weeks ago. Considering the police station is just around the corner it surprises me that even our High Street is not free from the attentions of the burglars. However they have gone one step further than most to prevent further attacks and installed a device which creates a smoke screen so the burglars can’t see.
The question of course is what lengths should you be able to go to prevent your property from being attacked. There have been cases where householders have killed intruders. Some have been sent to prison for murder and others have been let off. It seems when it comes to protecting ones property the law can be a lottery. How far do you think we should be able to go to protect our hard earned possessions?
