Today we discovered the answer to the question of why the complex doesn’t have any doors. According to a news article on this site if it had doors it “would become a destination, and there would be little incentive for customers to spill out and enjoy the benefits of High Wycombe as a whole." The omission of doors also lessened the “environmental impact as it was "naturally ventilated" and did not require a lot of heating or cooling”.
So where do the shoppers “spill out” to? Well, there’s the old dole office and derelict former gas works site for a start. Perhaps it would be best if shoppers were prevented from spilling out there? As for being “naturally ventilated” well, it certainly is ventilated I will give them that but sadly it’s a chilly North wind that does the ventilating making for a very unpleasant shopping experience. As you may have guessed I am not convinced by the explanation offered.
Sadly the shopping experience of the complex is getting worse as today while walking through I was nearly knocked off my feet by a yobbo running though as fast as he could. Presumably he was being timed doing “a lap” of the complex. There were several other yobbos running through in a similar manner. The security men were nowhere to be seen and as a result no attempt was made to stop the yobbo.
After surviving my experience as a human skittle it was off to the food hall in one of the shops at the outer edge of the complex. With my shopping list in hand I eagerly started searching for the items on my list. Did they have any cheese triangles in stock? No. Did they have any salted butter in stock? No. I left the shop in disgust and crossed over Oxford Road to visit a nearby supermarket where hopefully they had the items on my list. I had been let down by the complex yet again.
The same news article mentioned there are plans afoot to “turn a lot of the High Street into an area of cafe culture”. Please spare us! Why can’t we have a proper High Street like other market towns with shops that sell items we really need?
A lot of people in this town consider the complex to be a mistake. I've said it before so I'll say it again perhaps the current complex should be demolished so a proper shopping center could be built in its place? Are you with me on this one?
