More of the new traffic lights around the complex were put into action late last week. It came as no surprise to me that when the lights were switched on the traffic in the vicinity ground to a halt. Over recent months roundabouts throughout Wycombe which worked perfectly well (and cost no money to run) have been replaced by expensive lights that have only served to impede the flow of traffic and raise the anger levels of motorists.
According to news reports on this site the new complex is now expected to attract 235,000 people in its opening week although there are only 4,954 spaces in the town centre car parks. In the same news report it was mentioned that staff and customers were being encouraged to use to use public transport to get to the multi-million pound shopping centre rather than their cars.
This is the age of the car so will the staff and customers use public transport? Of course they won't! With the volume of traffic expected not only will the cars be held up but so will the busses that make up the public transport system rendering it useless.
Anyone coming to visit the new complex by car will have to brave Handy Cross, the Abbey Way roundabouts and the narrow and already congested roads in Wycombe town centre before they even get to the car park. The question is why didn’t anyone in authority think of this before they built the complex?
Look on the bright side. For anyone like me who works in the town centre and has private reserved parking it‘s best the other shoppers are stuck in their cars waiting in the traffic jams because I will have the new shops all to myself.
