The incident has since been confirmed as a car fire with firefighters from Bucks Fire and Rescue arriving at the scene.
Several lanes were closed but at the time of writing, two have reopened.
However, those stuck in the queues are expected to wait at least 20 minutes with congestion going back roughly three miles.
One driver has told the Free Press that the M40 is a 'complete standstill' as a result of the car fire.
In a completely separate incident, there were heavy queues along the M40 between Junction 4 and 3 due to a 'three-vehicle crash on outside lane' of the motorway.
A motorist told the Free Press that 'the drivers were all stood stranded in the middle between the central barriers'.
