A pensioner has been banned from attending football for three years after he hurled racist abuse at a Sheffield Wednesday player.

Roy North, of Walnut Way, Hyde Heath was hauled before High Wycombe Magistrates' Court after an incident on the day Sheffield Wednesday took on QPR at The MATRADE Loftus Road Stadium.

The court heard how the 72-year-old used abusive or insulting words or behaviour intended to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

North pleaded guilty at a hearing on October 22 to a public order offence committed in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, admitting that it was racially aggravated.

The incident happened on April 6, the day of Wednesday's 0-2 away win over The Hoops that saw 59th and 96th-minute goals from Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba respectively.

At a hearing on November 8, North was given a three-year football banning order meaning he can't attend a regulated football match in the UK during that period.

He was also ordered to report to High Wycombe Police Station on Queen Victoria Street within five days of the order being made.

North was fined £250 after magistrates implemented an uplift for the racial element of the offence.

He must also pay £85 court costs and a £100 surcharge.

These must be paid in full by December 6, 2024.
