An exhibition celebrating an Army veteran’s artwork has been held at his care home.
More than 60 pieces of art by Michael Mossop, 94, were displayed at the Royal Star & Garter care home in High Wycombe.
Mr Mossop, who now lives with dementia, served in the Army for 31 years, joining in 1951 and reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
His works, both from before his time at the care home and those created since his move in February 2021, adorned the reception area of the home.
Mr Mossop started painting and sketching around 40 years ago, soon after his retirement.
Since his move to Royal Star & Garter, staff have been encouraging him to continue his hobby, which he says he finds therapeutic and enjoyable.
He also participates in arts and crafts activities organised by the care home’s Wellbeing Team.
The display, held on October 25, was well attended, including by Mr Mossop's family.
His daughter, Sarah, expressed her appreciation to the staff for recognising her father's talent and organising the exhibition.
She said: "Painting and sketching has been such an enjoyable and therapeutic part of my dad’s life for a long time, so for staff at Royal Star & Garter to recognise it and organise this exhibition means the world to him.
"I love the fact that at the age of 94 he is still encouraged to paint and be creative and stay connected to his earlier life.
"It’s important for his own mental health, it’s vital for someone living with dementia, and it makes him happy."
The care home’s Wellbeing Team, including Natalie, one of the wellbeing coordinators, were integral to arranging the exhibition.
Natalie said: "Michael is a really good artist, and he loves painting and joining in with our arts activities.
"Other residents, staff, and visitors were really impressed with his work.
"We know that participating in arts and crafts activities and old hobbies and pastimes can improve overall wellbeing and quality of life for older people, and people living with dementia.
"That’s why it’s such an important part of the care we provide at Royal Star & Garter."
Earlier this year, Mr Mossop was awarded the Nuclear Test Medal for his service with the Army on Christmas Island in 1959, shortly following hydrogen bomb tests there.
Royal Star & Garter, founded in 1916, provides care to veterans and their families living with disability or dementia, operating in three homes in High Wycombe, Solihull, and Surbiton.
