A transgender person from High Wycombe has claimed that certain areas of the country ‘are not safe for women’ after she was harassed on public transport.
Tia Latham, who grew up in the town, told the Free Press that the incident happened when catching the London Underground earlier this year.
She claims that after taking her seat on the train, a man ‘made it obvious’ that he was ‘looking for attention’ before approaching the television personality.
Following a ‘hostile exchange’ which saw the former model and 'Survival of the Fittest' contestant confront the person in question, she asked the question as to ‘why things have got so bad for women’ when out and about.
She said: “There are times where I don’t feel safe at all.
“You have to keep your wits about you as you just don’t know who can do what to anyone.
"I have experienced this in the past and you need to be aware of your surroundings.
“When that happened on the train, I was surprised that no-one stepped in.
“But at the same time, we have seen so many attacks with knives that you just don’t know who is carrying on.
“I feel a bit safer when I’m in Wycombe than compared to London, but at the same time, it is hard for women as many get approached when it’s not wanted.”
According to the National Police Chiefs’ Council, a woman is killed by a man ‘every three days’ in the UK, whilst 70,330 rapes and 194,683 sexual crimes were made against females in the year ending in March 2022.
In addition to that, Latham was also the subject of an attack in January 2019.
The incident, which was caught on CCTV, shows a hooded man chasing the former reality TV contestant and her friend, Charley Grabczak along Beechlands in Hazlemere.
Fortunately, the pair managed to get inside Charley’s house but the man – and his accomplice – turn their attention to Tia’s BMW which is parked outside.
While one attempted to smash the window with the pole, the other kicked and dented the door before kicking off the left-wing mirror.
She continued: “Parts of the country are not safe, and a lot more needs to be done because right now, things are scary.
“If the country doesn’t start making change now, I honestly think the world is done for.
“Girls and women need to be protected because there are dangers in lots of different areas.
“People are unsafe and they shouldn’t feel like that when just going about their business.
“Now we have a new Government in power, I hope they can do a lot more to protect girls and women.”
