A Buckinghamshire MP has said the county is 'incredibly important' to the Conservatives as the party works to re-earn the public's trust.

Greg Smith, MP for Mid Buckinghamshire said the Conservatives will 'come back fighting' in the area after losing seats in Wycombe, Aylesbury, Chesham and Amersham, Buckingham and Milton Keynes.

The Shadow Parliamentary Under Secretary for business and transport held his seat at the July election with a majority of just under 600 votes.

But in neighbouring Wycombe, Labour's Emma Reynolds was elected with a 35 per cent vote share, with Laura Kyrke-Smith also turning Aylesbury red with a narrow 630 vote win.

But in a visit to J H and Son farm on Thursday alongside opposition leader, Kemi Badenoch and Shadow Environment Secretary Victoria Atkins, Mr Smith said the Conservatives are in the process of 're-earning the right to be heard'.

He told the Free Press: "Buckinghamshire is incredibly important to the Conservatives and don't think we're going to just take our loss lying down, we're going to come back fighting.

"I accept (Labour) won and I accept we'd been in Government for 14 years and on some fronts people have decided they wanted a change.

"So now we are in the process of re-earning the right to be heard. No complacency, no natural belief that Labour are messing it up so people will automatically spring back to us. We've got to re-earn that right to be heard.

"Partially what today has been about is sitting down with farmers, listening to what their fears, concerns were.

"So we can come up with a local and a national pitch that seeks to re-earn that trust and have something that people can get excited about the Conservatives again for. "

The Conservatives lost 244 seats in this year's election, reducing the party down to just 121 sitting MPs compared to Labour's 411.

But now MPs are turning their attention to next year's council elections in the hope of gaining back what they previously lost.

Mr Smith added: "We'll be fighting very hard to keep control of Buckinghamshire Council in the all-out elections next May.

"I certainly never take anything for granted in Mid-Buckinghamshire but I will equally be working as we select candidates in Buckingham, Bletchley, Aylesbury and Wycombe to ensure that not only do we just hold mid-Buckinghamshire and Beaconsfield but we win those seats that we lost back."
