Work has started today to double the size of a gym in Chesham.
Chesham Moor Gym and Swim on Moor Road , which boasts hundreds of members, will see its gym area ‘double in size’, whilst the changing facilities will also be upgraded.
The leisure centre is also gaining a café, which will be a first for that area of the town.
The gym and studio closed on Wednesday, November 6, and its pool yesterday on Sunday, November 10.
The closures come as a contractor is set to commence work today (Monday, November 11).
Memberships for those unable to use the temporary facilities can be frozen, with annual memberships extended for the closure period.
The pool and gym are expected to reopen in March 2025, although this date is subject to confirmation.
The gym has already made provisions for its members during the closure.
Codmore Pavilion in Botley Playing Field, located nearly two miles from the current gym, will serve as a temporary facility.
The pavilion, which offers parking, will provide a mix of cardio, weights, and functional equipment.
Due to limited space, there will be no fixed-weight machines.
The gym has assured its members that the usual opening hours will be maintained at the temporary site.
While the courts at Chesham Moor Gym and Swim will remain open during daylight hours and can be booked as usual, studio and aqua classes will not run during the refurbishment.
However, some classes held on the courts in daylight hours will continue.
The Saturday morning Outdoor Circuits class and the Rusty Rackets tennis class with Lucy on Tuesday mornings will continue to take place. These can be booked through the instructor.
Chesham Town Council has confirmed that a contractor has been appointed to carry out the work, which is expected to last four months.
The council has also confirmed that the current timeline is subject to change.
Once the refurbishment is complete, the gym area will be approximately double in size.
The changing facilities will also be modernised, and a new cafe will be open for both members and the public.
