MPs from across Buckinghamshire have reacted to the news of Donald Trump's re-election in the United States. 

The Republican candidate swept to victory in the early hours of Wednesday, defeating Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris in a number of swing states. 

The news was met with a mix of emotions in the UK with MPs in Buckinghamshire stressing the importance of the country's ties with the United States.

Liberal Democrat MP for Chesham and Amersham, Sarah Green, admitted that "a Trump victory is not the outcome many were hoping for" but urged the Government to work with the new administration.

She added: "Whatever feelings we might individually have about the outcome, our Government needs to work constructively with the incoming administration.

"But we should also stand firm in promoting our core values of equality, democracy, human rights and the rule of law at home and around the world.”

Emma Reynolds, Labour MP for Wycombe told the Free Press: "The Prime Minister has congratulated President-elect Trump on his election victory.

"The government will work with the new US administration to defend our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.

"The special relationship has been cherished on both sides of the Atlantic for many decades and is founded on our shared ties through language, culture and cooperation on vital issues of national security."

Her fellow Labour MP, Laura Kyrke-Smith who represents Aylesbury added: "In a volatile and fragile world, it is vital that the relationship between the UK and US continues to thrive. 

"The Prime Minister has congratulated President-elect Trump on his victory. The US and the UK will work together in the years ahead in defence of our nations’ shared values."

Greg Smith, Tory MP for Mid Buckinghamshire congratulated the President-Elect, adding that the "special relationship between our two countries must preserve."

"The American people have gone to the polls and the democratic process has taken place, electing Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States, with big wins for the Republican Party in the Senate and House of Representatives.

"I congratulate President Trump on his victory and wish him well as the new leader of our closest ally."

Buckingham and Bletchley MP, Callum Anderson said: "The American people have decided who will be their next President in a free and fair election, and it is our responsibility as a Government to work constructively with the US on areas of common interest – and we will continue to do so."

The Bucks Free Press approached Joe Morrissey MP for comment but was told she is focused on her constituency and job in parliament. 

MPs Chris Curtis and Emily Darlington were also approached but did not respond.
