Residents have been told to keep their windows and doors closed as firefighters continue to battle a large barn blaze.

Four crews and fire engines were dispatched to Yardley Road in Olney at 12:36am this morning after reports that an open-sided barn full of hay and wood had caught alight.

Emergency services found the 20m by 25m structure “well alight” when they arrived – with the initial blaze affecting around 50 tonnes of hay and having spread to a 1,000-litre diesel tank and a nearby caravan.

The fire service has remained at the scene this morning and is continuing to urge those nearby to stay inside and keep their doors and windows closed.

A spokesperson said: “This incident is currently generating smoke and weather conditions may lead to this remaining in the area.

“While they are continuing to work at the scene, firefighters suggest residents and businesses in the area close to Yardley Road to keep doors and windows closed to avoid lingering smoke entering their homes and businesses.”

A propane cylinder was found at the site in the early hours of this morning and has been moved to a safe place.

The teams used a hose reel, respiratory equipment, scene lighting and a thermal imaging camera to fight the initial flames.

They are expected to remain on Yardley Road today and are continuing to use breathing apparatus and hay drags to resolve the situation.
