An aspiring baker from Buckinghamshire had viewers on the edge of their seats after dropping his cake on The Great British Bake Off.

Tuesday's episode of the Channel 4 series saw Dylan Bachelet and fellow competitors take on the newly-introduced ‘autumn week’.

Dylan, a skateboarder and retail worker from Bucks, said early on that he wasn’t a fan of the seasonal bakes – which were themed around Halloween and Bonfire Night – and the proof was, as they say, in the pudding.

In a nail-biting challenge that gave the bakers just a few hours to whip up a showstopper vegetable cake, the 20-year-old dropped his sponge on the floor, forcing him to start again with less than half the allocated time to spare.

He managed to just about pull through – despite declaring the setback of “throwing his cake on the floor” as “so annoying” – and impressed Paul Hollywood and Prue Lieth with his beetroot and orange flavoured Diwali cake, despite comments that it was a bit “messy”.

Dylan, who told hosts Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond at the beginning of the episode that he “didn’t really like autumn” and thought it was “a bit of a boring season”, was saved by Paul and Prue despite being in the bottom two, and fan favourite Nelly Ghaffar became the sixth baker to be booted off.

Next week will see contestants battle it out to impress the judges with their dessert bakes – with a sneak peak showing them taking on meringue nests, steamed suet puddings and tiramisu.

The Great British Bake Off airs at 8pm on Tuesdays on Channel 4. All episodes are also available to watch on-demand at channel4.com.
