For the third time this year, a BBC programme that showcases some of the best areas to live in the UK focused its attention on Buckinghamshire.

In an episode of Escape to the Country that aired in April, but was recently re-broadcasted this month, the show suggested why people should visit Amersham and its surrounding areas.

It looked at Tooting-based couple Carl and Michelle who were eager to leave their one-bedroom rented apartment in the capital.

The duo had just welcomed their first son, Hugo, and wanted to move into a property that could allow them ‘to do more as a family’.

Their requirements for a new home included three bedrooms, a child-friendly garden and train links to London.

The couple looked at various locations across South Buckinghamshire, as well as in Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire.

Speaking on the programme, which was recorded in 2023 but aired this year, they revealed that they wanted to ‘get away from the busyness of London’ and that they had ‘several social circles’ in the Chilterns.

One of the areas the couple looked at was in Prestwood near Great Missenden, whilst the production crew spent a significant amount of time in Amersham and High Wycombe.

Former Mayor of Amersham, Elizabeth Shepherd, told the programme: “The pleasure of getting off the train after a day in London and breathing the fresh air of the Chilterns, can really recharge the batteries.

“This is an attractive and soul-enhancing place to live."

Amersham resident, Sejal Sachdev, who moved to the UK from Uganda in 1972, and had lived in the town since 1994, added: “We wanted to start a family but couldn’t afford to buy a house in London, so we moved out.

“We were able to have our children here [in Amersham] and there are many grammar schools in this area.

“This is a massive pull for people to move here.”

Despite having a look at several properties in the region, Carl and Michelle opted to go for a house in Surrey.

The episode is one of three to be shown this calendar year that focuses on Buckinghamshire.

One from April looked at a couple who wanted to find a property in the county, with the show looking at areas such as Princes Risborough and Loosley Row.

The second, which aired in September, focused on North Buckinghamshire.

It looked at areas around Milton Keynes, especially the village of Olney, which is set to be the town where the well-renowned Christian hymn, Amazing Grace, was written
