Plans to install a 20m-high 5G mast next to Chesham Cemetery have been submitted to Buckinghamshire Council.

EE wants the new telecommunications equipment to replace the existing 17m ‘monopole’ on the Alma Road industrial estate.

The network operator’s plans are part of its efforts to expand coverage of 5G, the fifth generation of mobile network, across Buckinghamshire and the country.

5G offers faster download speeds and greater capacity, meaning more devices can connect in a single area at once.

Because the technology uses shorter wavelengths, new masts often need to be taller than older structures, so that the signal is not blocked by buildings or trees.

In its application for the new mast in Chesham, engineering firm KTL writes: “The proposal is to install electronic communications apparatus on behalf of EE Ltd.”

The existing equipment to be replaced is located off Alma Road behind buildings on the industrial estate at the border with the cemetery.

Plans show that the new, taller mast will be located directly next to the existing one, which is set to be removed.

The new mast will also be wider than the existing one, feature more antennas and clear the 16m high nearby trees by several metres.
