The bakery chain famous for its sausage rolls and sweet treats will open a fourth branch in High Wycombe this autumn.

The new cafe will be at the former Patisserie Valerie unit in the Eden Shopping Centre – and, coming after the announcement of other new foodie arrivals, sparked backlash over the complex “becoming a food hall” last week.

While not everyone’s happy about the upcoming opening – which joins fellow soon-to-open newbies Burger Daddy and Taco Bell in Eden – shopping centre director Andrew Norton said he was “delighted” to welcome the chain and “offer even more variety” for visiting customers.

And those keen to check out Wycombe’s fourth Greggs – alongside other branches in Micklefield, Queens Street and New Road – won’t be kept waiting long.

A spokesperson for the Newcastle-based enterprise said the shop was due to open “within a few weeks”, with more information to be released ahead of the big day.

It comes after former mayor Trevor Snaith pointed to the arrival of a fifth McDonald’s restaurant in the town as evidence of a decrease in “footfall and spending”, causing a “proliferation” of takeaway chains that show “money (isn’t) being spent on the right things”.

However, Mr Norton said Greggs’ replacement of another hospitality spot in Patisserie Valerie meant it wasn’t getting in the way of new retail arrivals but would instead diversify Eden’s food and drink scene.

He added: “With new leisure attractions like TeamSport go-karting and Clip ‘n Climb indoor rock climbing arriving soon, we’re continuing to build on Eden’s reputation as the region’s top destination for all things shopping, food and entertainment.”
