An attempt to change the speed limit on a road in Buckinghamshire from 60 to 20 miles per hour has been rejected.

A total of 9,158 people signed an online petition urging Buckinghamshire Council to make the change in Fawley, despite the village only having a population of 220.

The petition read: “The road is shared with pedestrians, children, dogs, horses and cyclists. It is the ‘pavement’ through the village.

“We are the only village in the Chilterns that remains a 60mph and someone is going to get seriously injured or worse.”

Fawley has five roads linking it to the wider area, including the road leading to Pond Cottage/Dobsons Lane, Icehouse Lane, Benhams Lane, Fawley Bottom Road and the road leading to Southend.

However, the council rejected the requested speed limit change, saying that Fawley did not meet their requirements of a 20mph area.

The council cited data from Thames Valley Police, which showed that there had not been any reported injuries or incidents on any of the main roads in the area between 2018 and 2022.

Dominic Barnes, the council’s deputy cabinet member for transport, told the Bucks Free Press that signing any new speed limit in Fawley ‘would be challenging’ and that data showed that actual vehicle speeds were generally between 12 and 33 mph.

He said: “This process costs a significant amount of money; Buckinghamshire Council cannot justify this expense given that a new speed limit is unlikely to improve road safety in the village.”
