A man has been fined £1,000 after being spotted on CCTV dumping seven oil containers on a Buckinghamshire roadside.

The man, who lives in Hayes and retained his right to anonymity by paying the fixed penalty in full, was caught by Buckinghamshire Council cameras leaving the empty containers on Middle Green Road in Wexham on August 16.

CCTV images show the driver parking up a red and white striped van before leaving the waste in a layby on the stretch.

He would have been subject to stricter penalties if the containers had been full of oil when they were dumped, including a higher fine and potentially a prison sentence.

Because the charge was paid within 14 days, the fly-tipper also managed to dodge court action.

The council introduced the new fixed penalty rate of £1,000 in December 2023 to “create a greater deterrent to people from wilful and deliberate illegal waste dumping”.

The first person to be issued the maximum charge for fly-tipping in the county was a man from Bracknell in February who was caught dumping household waste in Denham on a traffic monitoring camera.

Thomas Broom, the council’s cabinet member for climate change and the environment, said the crackdown on the offence “sends a clear message to people that it will not be tolerated and we will pursue you”.

Adding: “For these lower-level cases, the offender’s admission means we can now deal with it at the fixed penalty level rather than prosecuting the case in court, meaning our officers are able to focus their efforts on more prolific offending.”
