A traditional pub in Marlow is celebrating a transformation, as their venue had been struggling and is now thriving with plenty of new customers.

Club secretary for the Royal British Legion Club Marlow Sophie Farley said that a year ago the club was at risk of closure.

"It was going down the pan," she said. "We were really struggling to stay afloat. In the last eight or nine months the committee has completely transformed it."

Mrs Farley said that the group had pulled together some great ideas to get a range of people down to the club who wouldn't usually come.

She explained that lots of people think that the club is just for old soldiers, but they want to stress that it is a place for everyone.

"We've had lots of children's birthday parties and an easter bunny do. We're also having a Christmas party for the kids," Mrs Farley continued.

"We're also doing free pool and free jukeboxes so we're getting lots of young people down. And there's only two pool tables in the whole of Marlow and we've got one of them!"

The pub is also starting up a pool team which will commence from October.

Mrs Farley said that they feel they are starting to cover all age ranges which is in turn helping the pub stay afloat.

They recently had a drag artist perform on the premises which saw a great turnout. "You wouldn't think the legion would ever do that but we did!" she said.

"It's our way of trying to get out there and show Marlow that we're not just an old people's pub, we're actually pretty modern. We're doing really well now."

The drag night was so successful that the Royal British Legion Club will be putting on another event in November.

Mrs Farley said that the pub is completely booked up for parties pretty much every weekend, and has been for several months.

"We turned it around completely! It was a dire situation, everyone thought that it was on its way out and there was no hope for us really," she said.

"They all thought we were going to lose it, and it's the complete opposite now everyone is buzzing about the place."

The pub, which rents its kitchen to a talented team, will be starting on Friday nights doing tapas evenings for guests and then from November 13 they will be serving home-cooked Sunday roasts.
