A 32-year-old man from Milton Keynes who was found guilty of sexual assault by penetration has been given a jail term of more than six-and-a-half years.

Liam Carter, of Netherfield, Milton Keynes, was sentenced at Reading Crown Court today.

He had previously been found guilty of sexual assault and sexual assault by penetration.

The court heard how Carter had sent his victim, who knew the offender, a series of messages before throwing stones at the victim's window late at night at a property in Milton Keynes on January 31 2022.

He then invited the property uninvited, crept to the victim's bedroom and made a series of sexual advances, which were firmly rebuffed before the assault took place.

Carter had "ruined" his victim's life, according to prosecuting barrister Tim Starkey, reading from the victim's impact statement.

Carter, who appeared via video link from HMP Bullingdon and could be seen wearing a grey sweatshirt and a crucifix on a beaded neck-chain, repeatedly sighed loudly as the statement was read out.

The statement continued: "I am constantly thinking about it. I barely leave the house. I feel that I am constantly looking over my shoulder."

During the court case where the victim gave evidence, they said their "skin crawled" just at the sound of Carter coughing.

When the police informed them of the verdict, Carter's victim felt "happy" and that they could "move on", according to their impact statement.

Speaking in mitigation, defence barrister Vishal Misra said that character testimonials had described the 32-year-old offender has having a "kind and loving side to him."

But Judge Rachel Drake said that Carter's offence was "so serious" that only a custodial sentence can be applied.

Carter will serve six years and six months in prison for the sexual assault by penetration. He will serve two years and six months for the sexual assault, with both sentences running concurrently.

Judge Drake said that the offender will service two-thirds of his sentence before being released.

He will be placed on the sex offenders' register and is banned from contacting is victim for life.
