A man has paid a £1,000 fine after being caught on CCTV dumping rubbish on a country lane in Buckinghamshire.

The offender, who lives in Slough, dumped five bags of household waste at Black Park Road in Wexham on May 23.

He said the waste had begun to attract maggots after his local council failed to collect it – but could have avoided a tangle with the law by dropping it off at his local Household Recycling Centre for free.

Despite reportedly hoping that dumping the rubbish in the “darkness and seclusion” of the night would help him avoid detection, he was captured on CCTV and handed a fixed penalty notice of £1,000.

As per the new powers awarded to Buckinghamshire Council to help crack down on fly-tipping, he paid the charge in full and was able to discharge his liability and avoid being prosecuted or named in court proceedings.

This summer, the council became the first in England to take advantage of new powers introduced by central government to use dashcam footage from members of the public to help prosecute fly-tippers.

The local authority also raised its maximum fixed penalty notice for the offence from £400 to £1,000 last year in the hopes of tackling a record-breaking rise in the number of fly-tipping incidents between 2022 and 2023.
