Hazlemere Fete had its biggest turnout accroding to organisers as it returned for the 162nd time with thousands flocking to the annual event.

It is estimated that around 4000 people attended the event that was held on the bank holiday Monday (August 26), to the delight of locals who turned up at the Hazlemere Community Centre.

The free event was officially opened by the chairman of Buckinghamshire Council chairman Mimi Harker at around 12.45pm and ran until 5pm with a host of activities for adults and children.

Chairman of Hazlemere Fete, Roy Cox said: "It looks like it was the biggest fete ever with around three to four thousand people, not all here at the same time, but it was the biggest ever for our 162nd fete.

"After all that time, we have done extremely well."

Ahead of the event, around 8000 flyers were handed out in Hazlemere and four neighbouring villages of  Penn, Tylers Green, Holmer Green and Widmer End.

Mr Cox added: "Our aim is to have free entry and free car parking and we want every stall holder and all the food businesses to make as much profit as possible for themselves.

"We don't take any of the profit, our aim is to run a community event for these five villages as well as the awful lot of people who come from further afar."

There were 80 pitches at the event for businesses to showcase themselves while food vendors served around 1000 meals.

There was a children’s play area including a face painting station, fairground rides and a bouncy castle as well as a craft fair which had 22 different stalls.

Live music was played throughout the day on two different stages with Michelle B, Kevin Taylor, Derek Grey, and the band After the Rain among others entertaining the crowds.

Around 1000 classic vehicles were also on display on the fields of Sir William Ramsay for retro car lovers to enjoy.

Animal lovers were also in luck as they could head over to the 'meet an alpaca' stall or enjoy the dog show which had around 100 different entries

The dog show had various categories including a competition for dogs who look the most like their owner.

Stormtroopers from a Star Wars costuming club were in attendance too providing a perfect photo opportunity for fans of the franchise.

Any profit made from the fete is set to be donated to charity with organisers currently processing the funds from the event.

Hazlemere Fete works most closely with charities such as the Hazlemere Community Centre as well as the Royal British Legion, the local scouts and sea cadets and the Amersham Museum.
