A Wycombe school is set to build a new ‘forest shelter’ classroom for outdoor lessons after Buckinghamshire Council approved the plans.

Tylers Green Middle School has been granted consent to put up the 9m by 6m structure opposite the existing ponds within its grounds.

The community school for pupils aged seven to eleven ‘requires a dedicated outdoor teaching space’ to deliver certain elements of the curriculum, according to its application.

Plans for the structure describe it as a ‘rustic and inviting shelter’ with ‘bespoke panels and a waterproof roof’ to provide a functional area for outdoor lessons in the existing forest schools area.

The shelter comes with built-in benches providing seating for up to 70 pupils at once, according to Setter Ltd, the school playground equipment firm behind the design.

Design documents state: “The shelter is complete with panels to the rear to provide privacy from the road, with a gap at the top of the panels as requested to provide more light and airflow through the shelter, and a centrally-mounted whiteboard to provide a focal point for lessons.

“The attractive feather-edge timber roof has a waterproof lining to ensure the shelter has no drips and is fully functional in all weathers.”

Planning officers granted a certificate if lawfulness for the proposed shelter, which they said did not require planning permission.
