A Buckinghamshire listed building used to in James Bond, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and other films is set for big changes.

Plans have been put forward to upgrade parts of Heatherden Hall, the early 19th century, Grade II listed mansion, which sits in 6.7 acres of gardens at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath.

On the ground floor, the ‘existing fire alarm system is at end of life and requires upgrading and enhancing’, according to the application.

Meanwhile, a distribution board, a key part of the building’s electricity supply system, is also at the ‘end of its life’ and its cables are ‘aged’.

Heatherden has been used as a location for the Carry On films of the sixties and seventies as well as the blockbusters of recent decades.

Pinewood describes the site as having ‘magnificent’ formal gardens and a ‘picturesque lake, fountain and bridge’, which have external power and easy access.

Some of these areas of the grounds feature prominently in scenes from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Bond classic, From Russia With Love.

The estate was also used in Amazing Mr Blunden, while recent projects shot in the building’s grounds include Mary Poppins Returns and Rocketman.

Heatherden’s ballroom, with its crystal chandeliers, open fireplace and French windows, has also featured in Criminal, Eddie the Eagle and Batman.

Away from film, the estate has also hosted key moments of history, including the ratification of the treaty to create the Irish Free State.
