A payphone in High Wycombe is set to be removed after just 13 calls were made from it in a single year.

The neglected phone box is on the corner of Priory Road and Amersham Hill A404 outside Edgecote House.

A three-month consultation on the removal of the phone ended last week without a single objection being raised.

A public notice by BT put up on April 12 reads: “We’re planning to remove this payphone. Unfortunately, it just isn’t used enough for us to carry on running it.”

Along with its application to remove the phone box, BT also provided data on the unit, which showed that there no helpline calls made from it during the last 12 months.

Ofcom data also showed that the site had outdoor coverage for voice calls for all four of the main networks – EE, Three, O2 and Vodafone – and indoor coverage for voice calls for EE and O2.

Buckinghamshire Council planning officers also said that the site was ‘not in a high frequency accident or suicide spot’.

In 2016, the former Wycombe District Council objected to a previous proposal to remove the payphone.

Data at that time showed that some 143 calls were made from the location in a year and it was suggested that keeping the phone would be helpful to the occupants of a nearby hostel.
