Hundreds of people descended to a pub near High Wycombe as they watched England’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Whilst no official attendance was given, images from those at the Beech Tree would suggest nearly 1,000 spectators entered the Amersham Road pub in Hazlemere on Sunday, July 14.
This includes the hundreds of Three Lions fans who stood outside the boozer on a grass verge and pavement, as many gathered along the street to watch the showpiece in Berlin, Germany.
The pub’s popularity during the tournament grew significantly through word-of-mouth, with outdoor tables for the final versus the Spanish being sold out just hours after England’s semi-final victory against the Netherlands on July 10.
To help meet demand, the pub ordered 100 more tables, which were also sold out in little to no time.
What also helped the boozer attract extra punters is the pub’s huge outdoor TV.
The piece of equipment is located in the main garden which is adjacent to the main road.
This has allowed members of the public to stand on the street and watch several fixtures during the competition, with England’s games being regular sell-outs.
And one customer who visited the pub on the day of the final said they were impressed with what they saw.
The gentleman, who goes by the name of Isaac, said: “It’s the first time I’ve been here, and it was really good.
“Yeah, it’s a bit crowded and you can’t really hear anything, but it’s something different with England being in the final and everything was very enjoyable apart from the result.
“The staff were help helpful.”
Fans were decked in red and white during the contest with many wearing replica shirts, flags, buntings, face paints and bucket hats on the day.
Two friends, Ollie and Ben, who live in the area, added: “It’s completely packed and you can see why.
“They’ve got a huge TV screen and it’s easy to see when you’re walking or driving by.”
Ollie, who ironically got Spain in his work sweepstake, continued: “Whatever happens, I’m a winner but nothing will beat England winning – that would mean the world.
“Yeah, I’ll be £120 up if Spain wins (which they did do) through work, but you couldn’t put a price on England winning.”
The opening 45 minutes were a cagey affair with either side having a foothold in the game before Nico Williams opened the scoring for Spain on 47 minutes.
England knocked on the door and eventually equalised through Cole Palmer’s brilliant first-strike on 73 minutes.
The Beech Tree crowd went ballistic when the goal was scored, but La Roja clinched their fourth European Championship in their fifth final, as Mikel Oyarzabal bagged the winner with four minutes remaining.
As soon as the final whistle went, stunned England fans left the pub in silence.
One supporter, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “It’s all about the experience.
“I could have stayed at home and watched it by myself, which I was very close in doing.
“But I spoke to a couple of friends and they agreed to go to the Beech Tree and now I’ve got a story to tell, especially when all the beers flew on us as we got soaked.
“It’s just a shame about the result.”
