A Grade II listed pub with a history of famous customers is on the market for a buyer willing to give it a second lease of life.

An eye-catching balconette and faded lettering ensure that The Green Man in Aylesbury commands attention in spite of its unassuming position between Barclays and Halifax in the town’s market square.

The Grade II listed building, which has lain empty for six years, has been on the market for £525,000 since its closure, with agent WeSoldIt struggling to find a buyer despite enticements to “renovate and repurpose” the local landmark.

The Green Man’s intriguing exterior belies an equally interesting history, thanks to its proximity to the world-famous Friars Music Club, which welcomed acts including Queen, The Jam, U2 and David Bowie in its heyday.

Rumour has it that the pub was a favourite of Bowie’s before it shut its doors and was also Motorhead singer Lemmy’s favourite spot to visit in Aylesbury. If nothing else, it would surely have been a convenient stopping point for after-show drinks, right next to the club’s recognisable archway.

It closed its doors for good in December 2018, with pubgoers from all over Bucks sharing their sadness at the news on Facebook.

One person said: "Gutted is an understatement", while another thanked the owners for "the memories and providing a safe place to go", adding that they had "loved every second".

Alongside the bar area, a buyer would be handed “four floors of potential” totalling roughly 2,359 square feet and including a basement and two-bedroom apartment.

The agent also drew focus to the site’s “prime location” in Aylesbury town centre and closeness to new amenity complex the Exchange, as well as its short distance from the London-bound mainline train station.

While anyone up to the challenge would face the sizeable challenge of transforming the former pub’s dilapidated structure into a home, retail space or revived restaurant, WeSoldIt is confident that The Green Man remains “an attractive proposition” to the right investor.

Adding: “The Green Man beckons to be restored to its former glory and claimed as a cornerstone of Aylesbury’s cultural heritage. Don’t miss this chance to become a part of its legendary legacy.”

The “once cherished public house” is available for full purchase, leasehold or rental. For more information, contact WeSoldIt or view the property listing here: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147553454#/?channel=COM_BUY.
