Police have closed two roads in High Wycombe town centre after a ‘suspicious package’ was found in a car outside the town's police station.

St Mary’s Street and Queen Victoria Road were put under a cordon at around 11am today (July 1) after officers found a “suspicious package” in a car parked near the police station.

The road closures are expected to remain in place for “some time”, with nearby businesses and buildings evacuated and those in the vicinity asked to leave and avoid the area.

A man has been arrested under the Explosives Act in connection with the incident, which officers said they don’t believe is terrorism-related, although they are “keeping an open mind”.

The cordon is blocking the exits to St Marys Street and the Wycombe Swan car park, though police are allowing those parked in the Swan to leave.

The incident has caused significant traffic build-up throughout the town, with frustrated drivers honking their horns and queues backing up onto the ‘magic roundabout’ at the junction of the A40 and A404.
