Police closed one lane of a busy road while working with firefighters to tackle a large fire at a landfill site in Beaconsfield.
Three fire crews were called to Broad Lane early yesterday morning (June 27) after reports of a blaze at a landfill site.
At its height, the fire spread across the entire refuse area, around 20 by 50 metres, and three water carriers, two offices and members of the Thames Valley Police Force were recruited to help put out the flames.
Police closed one lane on Broad Lane, just outside the landfill site, at around 9am yesterday, a temporary measure that remained “for some time” while officers helped supply water to the firefighters.
The landfill site at Springfield Farm Quarry was the subject of a recent planning application to extend its use as a refuse area until 2044 and expand the area beyond its current boundaries.
Veolia Landfill submitted the plans back in May and they have since stirred local discontent, with Cllr Alison Wheelhouse describing “long and continuing issues with odour management” from the site.
Residents have also complained of “horrendous smells” and a “foul stench” coming from Broad Lane in local Facebook groups.
The deadline for submitting objections to the extension plans is today, Friday, June 28.
