A Grade I listed Amersham church has been told by boiler maintenance engineers that it needs a new heating system ‘as soon as possible’.

St Mary’s on Church Street has been experiencing problems with its boiler for the last few years and needs a new one fitted.

The church, which dates to 1140 A.D, has outlined its proposals to replace the heating in a new planning application to replace its boiler house.

The Parochial Church Council has submitted its plans to Buckinghamshire Council following a review to determine the most suitable energy source.

The review decided that renewable energy sources and alternatives to gas were either not suitable due to costs or installation and visual issues.

It was therefore agreed with the Diocesan Advisory Committee that gas boilers should be retained as the source of heating.

The Church Council’s plans read: “It is felt that the most cost effective and sensible solution appears to be to replace the existing gas boiler with a modular setup comprising multiple high efficiency condensing gas boilers.

“It is possible to support this solution under the Church of England and Diocesan guidelines as the alternative solutions are either not viable or can be excluded on the grounds of cost.

“The change to a more efficient boiler system would also certainly result in a reduction in gas consumption and therefore would reduce operating costs and show a small carbon saving.”
