A school in High Wycombe has been rated top-of-the-class by an Ofsted inspector who praised its "expert teaching, enriching curriculum and diverse community".

Headteacher of Wycombe High School Nicola Renyard said she was “thrilled” with the report, which awarded an ‘outstanding’ rating across all four categories following an inspection on April 30 and May 1.

The inspector described Wycombe High School’s sixth form as “a beacon of excellence” with an “aspirational culture (which) values hard work”, and heaped special praise on its ‘futures programme’, an initiative aimed at helping students develop relevant life skills.

They also said the wider school provides exemplary opportunities to “nurture, develop and stretch pupils’ talents and interests”, emboldening many to “establish new clubs and societies”.

Students at Wycombe High reportedly “display excellent self-control and highly positive attitudes to learning” and “share highly respectful relationships with staff, creating an open and encouraging culture where everyone is equally valued”.

The inspector said the school’s staff appeared to have an expert handle on their chosen subjects and were “alert to the stumbling blocks and misconceptions that pupils might encounter” and consistently able to “present new subject matter clearly and effectively”.

In summation, the report describes Wycombe High as an establishment that “equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful”.

Ms Renyard said the rating was “a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students”.

Adding: “Our school community strives to live out our values of ‘limitless ambition, infectious joy, insatiable curiosity and generous spirit’. We will continue to work tirelessly to maintain and build upon this outstanding achievement.”

David Garmon-Jones, chair of the board of trustees said: “This outstanding rating reflects the exceptional leadership and the unwavering commitment of everyone involved with Wycombe High School.

Wycombe High first opened back in 1901 in Clock House, Frogmoor. After several relocations, the school became a girls’ grammar in 1944 and moved to its current site on Marlow Hill in 1956 after an increase in local demand.

Today, its campus includes a specially designed music centre, an all-weather pitch and technology, sports and drama blocks.
