A family-run farm dating back to the 19th century has lifted the lid on its operations to promote a better understanding of ‘where food comes from’.

Lacey’s Family Farm, at Bolter End Farm in Lane End, participated in the nationally observed Open Farm Sunday on June 9 to show locals what “goes on behind the scenes” to create their favourite milk and dairy products, which are sold directly to customers in the farm shop and supplied to local restaurants and businesses.

Alongside its educational incentives, the open day hosted tractor and trailer tours of the farm, as well as milking demonstrations, hook-a-duck and face painting activities and food and drink including Lacey’s specialty ice cream and milkshakes, Reading-based Rollin’ Inn mobile bar and a Brewed by Boon coffee van.

The family-run farm, which also has a shop and in-store butcher’s counter, was founded in 1936, when Percy Lacey bought the first three Guernsey cows to Bolter End.

It has gone on to win a number of awards, most recently named Best Farm Shop/Deli in the Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire region by the lifestyle blog Muddy Stilettos.

Such local popularity was on full show on Sunday, with over 2,000 people stopping by to learn more about farming practices and sample some of the top-of-the-line homemade produce.

Will Lacey, who manages the farm alongside his brothers Dan, Gideon and Ed, said: “Open Farm Sunday is a brilliant opportunity for us to show and explain to families just how the farm works.

“We relish the opportunity to talk to local children about farming practices, as this is something that unfortunately doesn’t get much more than a brief overview in schools.

“We are a small team and of course we couldn’t do what we do without support from many local farmers, neighbours, friends and family. The whole community really comes together to support us, and we’re so grateful.”
