A planning application for a Grade II listed building considered ‘integral to the historic fabric’ of Amersham’s old town has been approved.

Buckinghamshire Council planners have given applicants Mr M and Mrs J Day permission to build an extension onto the rear of Selby House at 14 The Broadway.

Plans state that the building has historical records dating back to the 17th century and that it plays a ‘pivotal role in the rich history of Old Amersham’.

Proposals include demolishing the existing conservatory, which was added as an extension in the 1980s to make way for a new single-storey extension.

Plans state: “Demolition of the conservatory allows the creation of a large kitchen/breakfast area, by extending the full width of the rear part of the house.

“The curved boundary wall of the house will then become part of the extension, with double French doors and sidelights.”

Heritage officers previously expressed concerns about the roof design of the extension, which they claimed was at risk of having a ‘negative impact on the listed building’.

They said: “There were several issues with the proposed roof design that impeded the windows and to hide the historic timber framing of a listed building to the first floor.”

However, revised drawings were then submitted, proposing that flat roofing is placed between the main building and the proposed extension at the rear.

Officers said: “This prevents any disturbance to the windows on the listed host building and moves the pitched roof further from the timber framing.”
