Tesco will revamp its ‘austere’ High Wycombe store in the Eden Shopping Centre after Buckinghamshire Council has approved the retailer’s plans.

The supermarket giant will give the shopfront a facelift, including by fitting new windows along the Denmark Street side.

Proposals include also adding new windows to the store’s existing entrance, as well as a new canopy over the doors and the relocation of fire exit.

Tesco’s plans state: “The proposals seek to enhance the store front by increasing the proportion of fenestration and creating a more active frontage adding interest and transparency to the ground floor of the building.

“The proposals also seek to improve the architectural quality of the building’s prominent southeastern elevation, which is currently an introverted and austere facade.”

Tesco’s plans state that the ‘increased glazing will provide more activity to the street scene’ and that it does not plan to alter other parts of the building.

Buckinghamshire Council owns the freehold of the supermarket, which is in the heart of Eden and is surrounded by the shopping centre on three sides.

Tesco holds a lease for the ground and first floors, which house the shopfloors, as well as just under half of the second floor, which contains a mix of ‘back-of-house’ retail floor space and car parking.
