Fire crews have shared photographs of the aftermath of a serious lorry crash on the M40 motorway.

A lorry went through the central reservation and hit a bridge support, a mile from junction 9 for Bicester this morning (June 7).

Crews from Bicester Fire Station, Kidlington Fire Station and Rewley Road Fire Station attended the overturned HGV which had shed its load.

It led to widespread traffic disruption as the northbound carriageway was blocked and there were five miles of standing traffic on the southbound side.

There were also knock-on delays on the A34 northbound from Islip to Weston on the Green and leaving Bicester.

A signed diversion through Middleton Stoney also came to a standstill.

The M40 northbound will remain closed for the foreseeable future whilst essential repairs are carried out on the carriageway.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Thankfully nobody was seriously injured and the driver is now in the care of South Central Ambulance Service."
