High Wycombe residents have objected to ‘ridiculous’ plans to build a six-storey block of 51 new one and two-bedroom flats.

Hightown Housing Association plans the new apartments at Collins House and Bridge Street Car Park where Desborough Road meets Mendy Street.

The new homes would replace the existing vacant three-storey building at the site, which would be demolished.

The number of one-bedroom apartments proposed was increased following comments from planners during the pre-application stage.

Proposals for the L-shaped building include a courtyard and a total of 28 parking spaces, seven of which would be for disabled users.

However, the plans have attracted letters of objection from disgruntled Wycombe residents.

Calvin Cheong of Mendy Street said: “The proposal is a ridiculous idea for many reasons. Closing a road when the access is terrible into Mendy Street already.”

Mr Cheong said taxi drivers, delivery drivers, mopeds and shoppers park and drive up the road ‘constantly’ and ‘frequently’ park on the curb or on the side of the road, blocking access to the Sumner House car park.

Harriet Ford, who lives on the same street, also complained about the environmental impacts of building the new flats. She wrote: “The dust and pollution created by the construction will have a detrimental impact on health.

“As someone with a respiratory condition, I would not be able to live next door to such a construction site.

“Therefore, if this proposal is to go ahead, I would have to move, which I find totally unacceptable.”
