A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been re-issued for Buckinghamshire following a night of heavy rain and lightning.

The Met Office first issued the warning at 11pm last night to remain in place until 10am this morning, Thursday, May 2.

The government agency has now released another warning for thunderstorms across the South East, coming into force at 12pm and remaining until 11:59pm tonight.

Flooding is expected across the region today following thundery downpours last night, and drivers have been warned to double-check for road closures before travelling.

The Met Office has also said there is a small chance that communities could become cut off by flooded roads and that power cuts may cut off services to some homes and businesses.

Despite a wet and windy start to the month, temperatures – which hit an annual peak of 22.1C on Wednesday – are expected to stay on the rise.

Marco Petagna, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said some places could even see their warmest temperatures of the year today.

He told the PA News Agency: “After a night of storms, the rain will ease in the south of England for a while today. We could see the skies brightening up in a few places and it will be another warm day. Parts of the South East could even get to 24 degrees and beat yesterday's temperatures.

Looking ahead to the Bank Holiday weekend, Mr Petagna said the forecast showed a “very mixed picture”.

Most areas of the country are likely to experience some rain over the weekend, but temperatures will remain fairly warm, in the mid to late teens. There are likely to be showers across the country on Monday.
