A man from Marlow has been granted planning permission to build a shepherd’s hut on a private island on the River Thames.
Tim Pottage, who owns a plot on Lock Island, a private cluster of riverside homes just downstream from Marlow Bridge, applied for permission to build a two-by-four-metre hut on the land in February.
It would replace a small wood store on the island that Mr Pottage said has fallen out of use due to “a lack of care and maintenance”.
The plans for the modestly sized wooden hut with a corrugated tin roof and wheels were approved by Buckinghamshire Council on April 23.
Lock Island, which sits between Marlow’s historic weir and lock, the former of which was mentioned in the Domesday Book, is a private island populated by riverside homes that is accessible only via a footbridge or from the river.

Once constructed, Mr Pottage said the hut will be used for the land’s “intended recreational purposes”, including fishing, camping, boating and picnics.
He also pointed to the precedent set by adjacent plots on the island, which are already home to a mix of wooden and brick-built sheds.
The council’s approval of the proposal was due in part to the hut’s “traditional appearance”, its lack of incursion on neighbouring properties and its intended “enhancement” of the land, in keeping with its historical use.
