Police have arrested a man for shoplifting and knife possession in Milton Keynes as part of an operation tackling alcohol-fuelled antisocial behaviour and aggressive begging.
The man was arrested by Thames Valley Police officers near Milton Keynes Central train station yesterday, Wednesday, April 24.
Officers had been carrying out Operation Desktop, an initiative aimed at stopping alcohol-fuelled antisocial behaviour and aggressive begging outside the station when the arrest was made.
The man, who was detained on suspicion of having a bladed article and shoplifting, is now being held in police custody and an investigation is ongoing.
As part of Operation Desktop, a Public Spaces Protection Order has been implemented at the train station, prohibiting the consumption of alcohol with a maximum fine of £500.
Central Milton Keynes neighbourhood police officers were also on visible patrol around the city on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Support and assistance has been offered to all individuals involved (in the antisocial behaviour) through working in partnership with ARC (Addiction Recovery Community) and Milton Keynes City Council’s housing department.
“A number of these individuals are not homeless and have access to suitable housing. Those who are currently homeless have been offered suitable housing but have chosen not to accept or engage with the Council.
“Thames Valley Police want to promote Milton Keynes as a safe, welcoming and desirable city to live, visit and work in and are determined to address the public concerns, so therefore, there will be an increased police presence in the area.”
