Police have said that a man arrested for attempted murder in a Buckinghamshire town was known to the victim, a woman who remains in hospital in a critical condition.
Thames Valley Police were called to Melbourne Road in High Wycombe at around 1:20am on Sunday, February 18, following a report of assault.
A woman in her 40s was taken to hospital in a critical condition and a 38-year-old man from Wycombe was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
A spokesperson for the police force has now reassured members of the public that they believe the attack was an "isolated incident" and poses "no further risk" to the town.
They also revealed that the victim, who remains in hospital, and the suspect, who is being held in custody, were known to each other before the attack.
Adding: "We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. While our investigation continues, you will see an increased number of officers in the area.
"If you have any questions or concerns, please approach our officers and ask them any questions or pass on any information you may have."
Speaking yesterday, Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Tracey Smyth described the attempted murder as a "serious incident" that was being "investigated thoroughly".
A nearby resident told the Free Press they had been woken up by the flashing police beacons in the early hours of Sunday morning.
They said: "The police were going door to door but they didn't say much, so hearing (that) it was an attempted murder is very worrying.
"I've got grandchildren who visit quite often, but (now) you have to think about whether it's safe for them here.
"I live and work in the town so to hear that this has happened is very scary. I was shocked."
Anyone with information that could help the police in their investigation can make a report online or by calling 101 and quoting reference number 43240077520.
