A council is making 'urgent' efforts to repair damaged width-restriction bollards on a historic bridge after they were damaged by an oversized vehicle.

Residents may have noticed in recent days that the bolts attaching the bollards on Marlow bridge to restriction-enforcing metal plates have been removed, increasing the risk of large vehicles breaching the three-tonne weight limit of the Grade-I listed structure.

Buckinghamshire Council told the Free Press that the bolts were removed following damage recently caused to the bollards by an oversized vehicle, with remedial work expected to begin imminently.

Peter Martin, Deputy Cabinet Member for Transport at the council said: "Buckinghamshire Highways are making urgent arrangements to repair the damage caused to the width restriction bollards.

"The bollards have been assessed and at present, they are in a safe state with their top plate either removed or secured in place.

"During the interim period before the repairs are complete, the signposted width restriction and the physical deterrent measures are still in place at the bridge, however the southbound carriageway in the direction from Marlow to Bisham is temporarily wider than desirable.

"The passable gaps will be returned back to their previous widths on completion of the repair work."

Marlow bridge has a long history of motorist incidents, with one zealous driver exceeding the weight limit by 34 tonnes and another being left with a bill of over £1000 after sustaining damage to their car while navigating through the bollards.
